Victim’s Response to Sexual Assault
A “normal” response after a sexual assault may not feel “normal”. Every human is unique and different. Therefore, people’s experiences are going to be very different. Sexual assault victims can expect a wide range of reactions and emotions. Whether the response is immediate or down the road, short-term or long-term, it is very normal and okay! IT IS NOT YOUR FAULT!!

Some of the common reactions to sexual assault are shame, guilt, feeling a loss of control, sadness, depression, denial, shock, numbness, and not accepting what has happened. Many times victims blame themselves for what has happened. It is important to always remember that it is NOT your fault. Victims must focus on themselves and engage in various forms of self-care-physically, emotionally, and spiritually. For more information see the FAQ’S page.
