Elder Abuse

Sexual Assault may present the older person with a number of issues that differ from those experienced by younger survivors, due to:

  • Age
  • Life Experiences
  • The Generation Gap (Age difference between older people and service providers)

Sexual Abuse Generally, is under-reported and carries a legacy of secrecy; it stands to reason that sexual abuse of older citizens is extremely under-reported.

HPSAC, Inc. can help individuals to overcome barriers that prevent them from accessing needed services.

Vulnerability

  • Physical
Willingness to risk self-defense against an attacker is minimized due to age related illnesses and physical strength.
  • Dependency
If caregivers are sexually abusive, survivors fear loss of assistance if victim reports.
  • Social Norms
Older victims can be reluctant to discuss the assault- feeling embarrassed that such a crime could happen.
  • Internal Stigma
Older people tend to internalize judgments of the wider community and may be overcome by feelings of shame.

How to Help...

  • Learn about community resources.
  • Find out from the victim what expressions and words are comfortable.
  • Keep in mind that ageism is a form of oppression.
  • Help identify and strengthen his/her support network.
  • Without making assumptions, integrate an understanding of cultural influences, stereotyping and discrimination.
  • Be mindful and proactive when abuse is interfamilial, there may be other victims- children/ grandchildren.
